The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international initiative, of which Japan is a member country, dedicated to the mobilization of biodiversity data. Following the success in the first 5-year 'proof-of-concept' phase (2002-2006), GBIF is now planning to move into the second phase of becoming a fully operational facility. In keeping with GBIF's work programs, this workshop was held in order to (1) contribute to the ongoing development of GBIF activities, (2) broaden networks within the Japanese research community, and thereby (3) enhance the use of GBIF biodiversity data for the benefit of Japan. To accomplish these goals, the workshop provides lectures by experts both from Japan and abroad on the topic of Biodiversity Informatics, one of the key themes of GBIF. This workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for promoting professional exchange among researchers.
